Angus Knight was recently invited to showcase its Confidence by Art project during NESA’s International Congress on Working Communities in Sydney. The Working Communities International Congress was hosted by NESA, the peak body representing providers of Australian Government contracted employment services. The Congress explored global and local perspectives on policy and innovations that get communities working.

The Angus Knight group’s art endeavour, Confidence by Art, intentionally creates the space for clients to explore and express their sense of culture, self, history and belonging. It promotes and shares with others understanding and respect for the vibrant and important cultures of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

The project, which has seen works published as a calendar and coffee table book, showcases the depth of artistic talent within the remote communities in which we operate through our employment services business, Jobfind. It was launched on 7 May of this year, at NSW Parliament House by The Honourable Victor Dominello, Minister for Citizenship and Communities, and Minister for Aboriginal Affairs.

To provide the diverse international audience of congress members to have an insight into how art has contributed to job seekers’ success in gaining employment, Angus Knight were the guest presenters at the evening cocktail function, hosting a Q&A with one of the artists of the project, Caressa Sengstock, among various artworks from the project on display. During the Q&A Caressa shared how she first came to Jobfind in search of new skills and training and how her subsequent participation in the Confidence by Art project led to her to realise a number of goals. These included being recognised as an artist, establishing her own business and fulfilling her passion for fashion design. With her artworks at the core of her designs, Caressa’s collections have been shown at the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week 2013.

The event generated interest from congress delegates and prompted a number of requests for further discussion about opportunities to be involved with the project.
