9 September 2013 – Defence Indigenous Development Program (DIDP) trainees are set to graduate with a range of new skills preparing them for gaining meaningful employment.

42 of the 45 Indigenous participants enrolled to complete the Defence Indigenous Development Program (DIDP), will graduate this week, after an educational 5 month undertaking. The program has equipped the participants with relevant capability training, life skills and confidence building endeavours to prepare them for work in the Defence forces, or any other professional environment. The program also provided participants with opportunity to work closely with communities around their campuses in regeneration programs, and it is this holistic approach to mentoring that has delivered participants who now stronger and more confident and are in turn able to contribute to and strengthen communities workplaces in the future.

Major Marty Alsford, Commanding Officer of the Northern Territory DIDP, who worked closely with the team stated “The mentoring team played a key role in delivering a life skills program to the trainees.”

The official graduation ceremonies are scheduled for Wednesday 11 September in Edmonton and Thursday 12 September in Batchelor. Each will include a military style parade as well as an award ceremony, attended by families of the participants, Angus Knight Mentors, members of the Defence Force and Angus Knight CEO, Tom Gibbons, confirming the trainees as official graduates of the DIDP for 2013.

DIDP activities included courses in Community Services, conservation and Land Management, along with WH&S procedures, financial planning, visits to various defence bases and awareness training in alcohol, drugs, and quit smoking programs.
